A 12-year-old Chinese Elm Bonsai (Ulmus Parvifolia) planted in a handpainted blue ceramic pot — a combination that consistently sells out. The cool blue glaze against the Elm’s grey-green bark and fresh foliage looks deliberately curated. Perfect for living room centrepieces, balcony displays, and gifting. The 9-year, 30 cm size is also available via the selector below.
Most bonsai pots sold in India are brown, terracotta, or black. They are safe choices — but they are unremarkable. This handpainted blue ceramic pot is neither. The cool, muted blue glaze creates an immediate visual contrast with the Chinese Elm’s grey-brown bark and bright green foliage — the kind of contrast that makes the composition read as intentional and considered rather than generic. It is the reason this particular combination returns to out-of-stock status faster than almost anything else we carry.
The 12-year specimen at 40 cm is our primary recommendation — it has the scale to function as a living room coffee table centrepiece or a balcony corner feature. The 9-year version at 30 cm is the compact option: desk-ready, windowsill-appropriate, and an excellent gifting size for most occasions.
Light: Full sun to partial shade; ideally morning sun with afternoon shade in Indian summers. Indoors, needs 4–5 hours of bright indirect light near a window.
Watering: Water when topsoil begins to dry. Daily checks in summer outdoors; every 2–3 days indoors. The Chinese Elm prefers consistent, even moisture over alternating extremes.
Seasonal behaviour: Semi-deciduous — may partially defoliate in cooler months (November–January). Fresh foliage returns in February–March. This is normal and healthy.
Fertilising: Every two weeks with a balanced liquid feed from March through September.
Which size is better for gifting?
Both work. The 12-year (40 cm) is the more impressive option for significant occasions. The 9-year (30 cm) is ideal for everyday premium gifting — accessible in size, easy to place in most homes.
Can I keep it permanently indoors?
Yes, with adequate light near a large window. Some outdoor time each year — even a few months on a shaded balcony — noticeably improves its vigour and appearance.
Will the leaves drop in winter?
Possibly — the Chinese Elm is semi-deciduous and may defoliate partially in cooler months. New leaves return reliably in late winter. This seasonal character is part of what makes the species interesting year-round.
